The Difference between Orthodontic Retainer and Braces
Most of the time, we get confused of the difference between braces and an orthodontic retainer. Sometimes, people think that both orthodontic appliances have the same functions. But the fact is that, these two appliances in orthodontics have different purposes.
Braces are often recommended by an orthodontist in order to properly align teeth. There are three types of braces used these days.
The first type of braces is called brackets. These are made of stainless steel or tooth colored ceramic which are bonded to the front surface of each tooth. Some brackets are clear and some are made of plastic materials. For cosmetic reasons, ceramic brackets are often used on patients because of the tendency of plastic brackets to collect stain and have discoloration.
The second type of braces is called lingual braces. Some people choose this type of braces because here, instead of attaching the brackets on the front surface of each tooth, they are attached on the back surface of the teeth. Thus, these braces are commonly unnoticeable.
The third type of braces is called traditional bands. This is commonly referred to as the full metal-mouth and is generally outdated. It is consist of metal brackets soldered to the metal bands that wrap around each of the tooth.
Retainers differ from braces in as sense that they are custom-made. These orthodontic appliances are used to help the teeth maintain their position. Usually, retainers are recommended on a patient after the patient stops using braces. This orthodontic appliance can also be used in order to provide solution to minor orthodontic problems.
Aside from their difference in purpose, the cost of braces and retainers may also differ. To know whether you need braces or retainers, you must go to an orthodontist and get consultation.
